Captain Jim McBriar and Mate Bill Lillis
Never Follow a Centerboarder………David Bierig remembered back in the 70’s when Mike English, owner of the Sail Yard took a brand new Morgan 38T race boat on the Interclub Cruise…the infamous name he put on it that year was “Wet Dream”.
Well Mike decided to follow Enigma back to Port Dover from Nannicoke up the shore. Bill Lillis remembers it this way… Wet Dream moving up the shoreline very quickly, those of us on Brier Rabbit wondering
what they were doing in there, several crew working at the mast….suddenly finding themselves catapulted to the bow pulpit….bow dipped down hard …mast must of swung 20′ forward at the top….a complete and utter FULL STOP. They dropped out because they loosened the keel…..John Schaal who was on board… later said there was some sort of plastic foam in the water, maybe filler, that surrounded the boat. I recall the RC wasn’t thrilled about reporting the name of the boat (remember it was in the 70’s)….I think they renamed it “Cheap Tricks” for purposes of reporting race results. The boat limped back to the dock and did not continue to race. Mike drew 7’6”, Enigma drew 5’. Need I say more.
