The Sleigh Ride………what year, they all blend together over time…but it was a howler,
back in the early 80s……on the Morgan 33…..the “Brier Rabbit” that always wanted to roll over but the mast got in the way……Port Dover to Abino……wind out of the SW building and building and building…..running beside Constance….Chicken Chute Up… out of control….Chicken Chute Down…..8 foot seas…must have been blowing 30. Every 9th wave rolled right over the back of the boat. Everyone hanging on for dear life off Colborne…… no life jackets, no harnesses, no jack lines…just hanging on……Constance three boat lengths ahead…..huge wave … Captain John Wolford washes off the Constance and is hanging on the transom….thought they had lost him Downwind Skill…..Turkey point to Naniticoke….15 knots…..got the Big Kite Up…surfing up to 12 knots…….Nyanza……time for the Daisy……halyard on the wrong side…..hook up John Mehl…..Hey John, walk out the pole, take the halyard around and bring it back. Crank him up JT…….15 feet over the water……..John is walking out the pole ……shackle lets go on the bosun’s chair…John drops straight down four feet…….somehow grabs the pole and is hanging out there and shimey’s back in…….I would like to see him do that again……..another near miss.
